In the new «Cooperatives» focus, the NZZ Content Creation team explores an economic phenomenon – even our country is one: «The cooperative is a special legal form that is suitable for groups of people or companies that want to pursue economic or social interests together. The focus is on the advancement and economic self-help of the members», is how the Confederation puts it in kmu.admin.ch.
That sounds almost too good to be true… The moneyhouse.ch database registered around 7 700 hits for Switzerland as at mid-December 2023. Twelve years ago, the figure is reported to have been more than 10 000. Does this business model still have a future? Why do even global corporations stick to this legal form? What distinguishes it from an association or foundation? For what reasons can you or do you want to be a member? Current research provides answers.
